IN THE COMMUNITY

Giving Back

We are thrilled to announce that during this year's annual Team Camp in Charlotte, N.C., USA Bobsled/Skeleton (USABS) will once again be partnering with Athletes for Hope and Dream on 3 (DO3) to host a special event at Topgolf on June 29, 2024.

As an organization, we are committed to not only achieving excellence on the track but also making a positive impact in the communities we visit.

Building off the success of last year's initiative, our athletes, coaches, and staff members are excited to give back to the Charlotte community while strengthening the bonds that make our team so special.

By collaborating with DO3, we will have the opportunity to welcome kids and families from Take On Sports to the Charlotte Topgolf facility, providing athletes with special needs a chance to play golf alongside members of the USABS team.

We believe that this event will foster meaningful connections, inspire shared stories, and engage all participants in friendly competition.

As we prepare for the upcoming competitive season, this initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and the power of sport to bring people together. We are grateful for the continued support of Athletes for Hope and Dream on 3, who share our passion for making a difference in the lives of others.

As a reminder: Unlike many teams from the nations we compete against, our athletes receive none of your tax dollars, nor continuous government funding. We depend on private donations and sponsorships to help us win World Cup championships and Olympic Gold. With your help, we have a chance to reach the podium at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milano Cortina.

Training for Cutting-Edge Performance

For years, the USA Bobsled and Skeleton team (USABS) has been cultivating a powerful partnership with the A2 Wind Tunnel and Aerodyn Technologies in Mooresville, North Carolina.

This ongoing collaboration has been instrumental in propelling our athletes to new levels of success and competitive advantage, both on and off the track.

In the high-stakes world of bobsled and skeleton, where fractions of a second can mean the difference between victory and defeat, our team has consistently sought out innovative ways to optimize performance.

The A2 Wind Tunnel has been a key ally in this pursuit, providing our athletes with access to cutting-edge technology and expertise that allows them to fine-tune their equipment and perfect their riding positions.

Our athletes have been regular visitors to the A2 Wind Tunnel facility, which opened its doors in 2006. Originally designed for the motorsports industry, the wind tunnel has become an invaluable resource for our team, enabling us to conduct comprehensive aerodynamics testing and analysis.

By leveraging this technology, we have been able to unlock new levels of speed, efficiency, and control on the track.

The benefits of this partnership extend far beyond the technical aspects of the sport.

As A2 Wind Tunnel general manager Geoff Eaker notes, "The energy that surrounds the team of family, competition, friendly rivalry and cultivating international relationships is something we love to be a part of." This sentiment underscores the deep sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that defines the USABS community.

As we look ahead to the upcoming season, our partnership with the A2 Wind Tunnel takes on even greater significance. With the world watching, our athletes will be relying on every advantage they can get to bring home gold for Team USA.

Catching Up with Bobsled Olympian Carlo Valdes

Q: What’s your favorite memory from your time with USA Bobsled?

A: I have a few favorite memories while competing, one being when I won my first World Cup Gold with Steve Holcomb in Lake Placid in the 2016 2-man race. Holcomb was coming off a 1+ year recovery from his Achilles injury in Sochi and it was an emotional victory. That win gave us a lot of momentum moving forward.

Another favorite memory was the World Cup weekend in Konigssee in 2017. Both 2-man and 4-man races were insanely close; teams were separated by one-hundredth of a second each. We managed to grab a Silver and Bronze in those races.

Lastly, walking into the Pyeongchang stadium for opening ceremonies in the 2018 Olympics will always be a favorite of mine. That was the moment where it finally hit me that I was an Olympian and all the hard work and sacrifice had paid off.

Q: What are you up to now and where are you based out of?

A: I'm currently based out of Irvine, CA. I've been working full-time in my career as a Financial Strategist and Insurance Broker.

I operate independently with several partners under The Miliare Group. In simple terms, I coach people to gain financial literacy and help them understand how money and taxes work. From there, I set up plans and accounts that are custom-tailored to them to help them reach their financial goals.

I've been doing this for 6+ years now and will stay in this career for the rest of my life. Personally, I keep things very simple.

I work on my own time, I make time to workout 4-5 times a week, and I'll take time to myself on weekends to relax, golf, and hang out with friends. Summer is pretty much here now, so I'll be at the beach a lot. I still travel quite a bit as well for both work and for fun!
